Is Resource Sharing Feasible for Project Stability?

There are many growing companies round the globe which are following the "Resource Sharing" policy to utilize the productive hours of the Resources in their bench time. Working simultaneously in more that one project, is it manageable? What could be the pros and cons of this policy? Can this be followed extensively? Are the Resources able to cope up with this?

Sharing Resources does not mean "Pick & Put" any one at any time. If it's not handled properly then even the Almighty will.....I think you got it.

Sharing resource should be done with proper planning and keeping project scope, roles & responsibilities of people.
My personal opinion is resource sharing should not be done unless and until management has some proper project plans. Work should be divided equally among all the resources and should not happen that the person doing good quality work is shared in most of the project to hide inefficiency of other resources.

"Resource Sharing" is depend on which phase of the application we are doing.. If project is on maintenance and we are getting task bi-weekly or monthly for 8 hrs only then we can go for resource sharing concept. But if you’re in such a phase where project development starts from scratch as well as deliveries are on particular duration for ex.: say 2 weeks for at least task of 40 hrs, then we can not go for resource sharing. The team "Resource Sharing" it self signifies that sharing resources as per availability of the resource. If resource it self occupied with multiple tasks then he can not give his best or can say quality work. And if we work for quality of the product then we should think on allocating resource or sharing resource for particular application.

Resource Sharing is certainly possible, although there are risks and problems that must be addressed.

If the resource - the employee - can be shared and the sum of all of their tasks is less than 100% of their time then there are few problems with resource sharing. The manager should make expectations clear to the employee and train them how to handle switching between tasks.

If the employee's tasks exceed 100% of their time then there can be problems. The employee does not feel they are doing well and may have difficulty tracking progress. The stakeholders who are waiting for results from the employee may be unhappy and add stress to the employee's day. In this situation the manager must provide support to the employee as well as monitor progress and deliverables. This is a more stressful situation, but some employees can strive in it.

Resource sharing in current market situation is cost effective and win-win strategy. However, before resources are shared, there has to be a MOU stating the terms and conditions, time sharing limits, cost sharing, and the most important Maintaining Confidentiality by the shared resources. As resources will be working for more than one organization, none should share any client and organization specific data with other organization that share the resource.

Logistics could be another area where resource may have to travel to different locations incurring variable cost. Stakeholders for such overhead has to be identified up front with clear T&C on absorbing such charges.

This is just an initial thought. If this is a real burning issue taken at Corporate level, we can have elaborate discussion / thought sharing.

As with anything in life, you cannot
"spread yourself too thin" or you will
impair your effectiveness.

However, significant synergies can
be obtained by a tightly-managed
sharing of resources. And indeed
there maybe significant aligned
asymmetries making it essential to
do several things at once. As such,
all of them will turn out better.
